box on the first hole. The first shot is wide open
with out of bounds right and a hazard left, but plenty of
room in between. The teeth of this hole is on the
second shot with a truly evil green, not an easy
start. Good news (sort of) the number 1 handicapped
hole is next, it gets easier after that. |

Tierra Oaks Golf Club in Redding is the most difficult in the area and many would say the most beautiful. The club opened in 1993 to wide acclaim. Stillwater Creek lines holes 1, 2, 14, 15, 16 and 18 while Golfers must shoot over the creek on 2, 16, 17 and 18. Add to that the tributaries marked as hazards on holes 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 13 you have a difficult and enjoyable day of golf. The club has had its growing pains being the second private club in town over the years and it is a golf club and not a traditional country club missing amenities such as swimming pool, tennis and the like. With golf primary on your agenda this is a course that will keep your attention, and with its varied terrain it will continue to be hold your interest. Amenities that are at the club include driving range, practice green, restaurant, banquet facility, and the lounge. The Golf Club of Tierra Oaks is surrounded by vacant land and a fantastic neighborhood of high end custom homes set well back away from the course.
The fairways are Bermuda with Rye/Fescue winter over seed. The greens are Bent grass (spots of Poa Anna in the spring) with predominate undulations on many holes that make putting tricky. Occasional bunkers both fairway and greenside through out the course. The undulations from tee to green on each hole make it interesting for the player, you wont likely see the same shot twice

The
Pro Shop at Tierra Oaks Golf Course is prominent, as you approach the
building it's right in front of you, the restaurant entrance is just to the
left while the cart garage is to the
right. |
A
great place to relax is the patio overlooking
the first tee. The same view is available just
inside from the small library and bar. |

The
clubhouse from another angle. It was
designed to have some similarities to the
clubhouse at
Augusta National Country Club,
home of the Masters. |
The
Dinning room shown here has a great
atmosphere. A specialty is all you can eat
Pasta Night on Thursday evenings that is open to
the public. You tell the chef's what you
like and they cook it at stations set up in the
dinning room
while you wait. |

The
practice putting green at Tierra Oaks is a great place to get
your touch ready for the round. |
|
|
|
|
The
practice range at Tierra is ample in size and having grass
to hit from is a great asset that some courses
in the area don't offer. |

lower level is home
to the locker rooms and
offices. |

#3
is a short par 3 with the tee shot going slightly down
hill. A two tired and generously sized green awaits.
When the wind blows the shot is generally pushed
to the left towards a pond that protects the
left and back of this hole. |
|
|
|
#4
Tee shot favors a slight fade.
Trees on the right are thick and not a good place to
be. A shot missed a bit to the left is ok as long as
it stays in bounds. The green is large with a large mound
that just
might be an elephant buried right in the center. |
#5
Tee is dominated by a large Gray Pine, the trees are also
known as a Digger Pines. The
hole is designed for a right handed players draw, some
longer hitters can cut the corner on this dogleg by going
left of the Pine and over the Oak trees. From the back tees there is no
chance to cut the corner as they sit 50 yards further back (the largest difference on the course). |
|
|
| |
#7
Tee. This downhill par 3 plays 162 yards from the
white tees,
you must carry a seasonal creek, like on many of the holes
at Tierra Oaks Golf Club.. |
|
|
| |
#11
is a beautiful par 3 at Tierra Oaks, seen here looking back at the green
and tee boxes in the distance.
The tips are 215
yards while the normal men's tees are at 175 yards. The safe shot is towards
the right of this long and narrow
green in order to avoid the creek just to the left of the
green.
|
At this point along the golf course the land surrounding it is undeveloped. A proposal called Tierra Knolls is being developed that will add homes, walking trails and still maitain open space.
|
|
|
|
|
#10 is a dogleg left, this photo shows the approach shot to the green from the middle of the fairway. A very nice start to the back nine. |
#12
tee box, this hole is rated as #2 on the course due to it
being on the back nine but in real life, it is the most
difficult at Tierra Oaks. A long hole with a severe right
handed dogleg on the second shot to a two tired
green. Aggression can be rewarded for the longer
hitters by cutting the corner but severe penalties await a
miss hit shot. Play for your par or net par and move on! |
|
|
|
|
#13
tee. Yet another dogleg, this one going left
left. This is not a difficult hole if played as
designed with
your second shot just 120-160 yards from the green.
Attempts to cut the corner of this hole can leave a
shorter shot in, or just as easily a second tee shot for a
lost ball. Hazards also come into play,
both short and long on the tee shot. |
#18
tee. The finishing hole at Tierra Oaks is ranked as the 4th hardest
hole and an unusual par 5 at that. It can
take driver out of your hands by forcing a 200
yard lay-up shot short of the creek. A
long (50 yards) and narrow green awaits what is
hopefully your third shot and is protected with
bunkers left and hazard to the
right. |
